Christina Simmons

Inspired by programs that help change how people live healthier and happier lives, Christina Simmons has been working in public health since 1990. Her role in the YMCA of Honolulu, specifically in the Diabetes Prevention Program is very exciting, seeing people set a goal of 7% weight loss and 150+ minutes of activity each week, and being a part in helping them meet and exceed their goals. Each person the program helps support contributes to slowing or stopping their path to diabetes. Simmons' long history of program planning and design in public health, nutrition, education and social services that targets a variety of community groups has allowed her to understand the many layers of making a successful program, and to troubleshoot quickly. The doors that open when people take on this journey toward improving their personal health is one of the main motivators for Simmons to continue pursuing the work that she does. Education and Experience:
  • M.A. in Public Health
  • Graduate certificate in Health Policy
  • Board certified Lactation Consultant
YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP)
  • The YMCA has a variety of chronic disease programs with the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) being the focal program of focus in Simmons field. This program is fully recognized by the Centers for Disease control for its quality. Almost every health insurance company in Hawaii (UHA, HMAA, HMSA, Kaiser, AlohaCare, UnitedHealthCare), including Medicare, will fully pay for the program as long as you qualify as being pre-diabetic or at risk of getting diabetes. It is a year long program so we suggest only those motivated to make true behavior change enroll. A word to the listeners: For those living on Oahu, when you join the program you get a 3-month membership to the YMCA! If you choose to continue on with your own membership we waive the joiner fee.
