Carole Mandryk - Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Hawaii at Manoa

Dr. Carole Mandryk, a former dean at Harvard University and award-winning instructor in Anthropology, has served as Director of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa (OLLI-UHM) since June of 2016. She has more than 30 years of experience as a teacher, researcher, and administrator at Universities and Colleges across the U.S. and Canada, including Harvard University, George Mason University, Grant MacEwan College in Canada, and the UH Mānoa Departments of Anthropology and Geography.
Education and Experience:
  • B.A. in Anthropology from Beloit College
  • M.A. in Anthropology & Museum Studies from George Washington University
  • PhD in Quaternary Studies from University of Alberta
Born in Syracuse, NY, Mandryk grew up in northern Virginia. Her work opened the doors for her to live abroad in several states, Canada, and become a “repeat” Hawaii resident, which started in the late 70s, 2005-2009, and then finally settling in 2014. After 30+ years of rigorous studies in academia – anthropology, archaeology, climate science, and academic administration, her educational journey has prepared her well for the job she now has. Mandry’s passion for lifelong learning and helping people is the driving force that keeps her going in her respective field. Her mindset going into work is knowing that there is still more she can contribute, and more that can be accomplished. She can make a difference. She can be a force for good. In addition to her vocation to serve seniors, Mandryk also serves her local community through participating in climate change initiatives by planting trees on Saturdays.
Oahu Lifelong Institute
    • Offers opportunities to enjoy learning in a relaxed environment without exams or grades, where they can meet like-minded peers interested in pursuing intellectual challenges. The institute promotes cognitive engagement, which keeps the brain young, resulting in people becoming healthier and happier. OLLI-UHM excels at combining mental and social engagement, offering courses, lectures, film series, workshops, field trips, all in an engaging, supportive social environment. People don’t just come to take classes, they come to see their friends and to make new friends. It’s a great resource to fight the epidemic of loneliness.
    • A $60 Term Membership entitles you to enroll in up to three courses, as well as at least three special events and/or Special Interest Groups (SIGs). There is no separate charge for individual classes other than occasional material supplies. Membership may be renewed on a term-by-term basis, at $60 per term. And – there are NO tests, NO grades, and NO mandatory class assignments!
    • Anyone 50 and better is eligible to join OLLI and take courses. There is no requirement for membership other than a desire to learn.
