Summary of Services:

Independent Living Centers are unique in that they provide services to all disabilities, of any age. The only qualifying factor is that the person needs to have a permanent disability and in need of assistance.  Serves are provided through all islands of Hawaii, free of charge, and will bring the service directly to the person to eliminate any barriers such as lack of transportation or if a person is bed bound.

Experience:

Roxanne Bolden first started working for an independent living center in 1991 at the Hawaii Centers for Independent Living. While at HCIL, she assisted the Executive Director, Mark Obatake, with the creation and development of the Guam and the CNMI centers for Independent Living. Currently, the development and creation of AILH and received her BA in Psychology from HPU. Roxanne is also a member of the Weinberg Fellows Program for Executive Directors, Class of 2011.

Growing up with brothers born with intellectual disabilities, two that became disabled as a result from serving in the military, and as her late father had disabilities due to age related issues inspired Roxanne to go into the field of Independent Living. Her father advocated her brothers to be included in activities that the rest of her siblings did, one of which involved being an altar server at their Catholic Church until they could no longer perform those specific duties.

Roxanne's greatest achievements is raising two wonderful children. As for her professional achievement she developed and created AILH at the time when HCIL was under major crisis and under federal investigation. They were able to save the IL funding that comes to the state of Hawaii by existing and providing the much needed IL services statewide.
